Finding Balance: How to Excel at Work Without Sacrificing Family and Social Connections

In today’s fast-paced world, work demands can often seem overwhelming, leaving us torn between our professional responsibilities and the needs of our families and social connections. Striking the right balance is about managing time, preserving our well-being, and maintaining relationships that sustain us. In my experience as a superintendent and educational leader, I've seen how the pressure to succeed professionally can sometimes lead to an imbalance that negatively impacts both work and home life. Yet, maintaining a healthy balance between the two is not only possible but essential for long-term success and fulfillment. So how can we do our best while staying true to our families and social connections? Here are a few strategies to consider: 1. Set Clear Boundaries It's important to define clear boundaries between work and home to create a sustainable balance. This means intentionally carving out time for family, friends, and personal interests. Start by defining when your w...

The Power of Partnership Leadership: Why We Can’t Do It Alone

In today's complex organizational landscape, no leader—no matter how skilled or visionary—can successfully drive change or achieve long-term success alone. Partnership leadership, the practice of collaborating across departments, sectors, and even industries, has become an essential strategy for navigating challenges and seizing opportunities. It recognizes that diverse expertise and perspectives are necessary to solve multifaceted problems, especially in a rapidly evolving world. The importance of partnership leadership goes beyond simply dividing tasks; it’s about creating alignment that amplifies the strengths of every contributor. Here’s why embracing this collaborative approach is crucial for sustainable success. 1. Diverse Perspectives Lead to Innovative Solutions Leaders today face problems that are not only complex but also unprecedented. From technological disruptions to shifting workforce dynamics, no single leader can have all the answers. Partnering with others who brin...

Unlock the Future

As I began researching and writing this summer, my goal was to explore three things I feel passionate about: helping teachers remember and stay in touch with their purpose as educators, preparing students to choose their path in life, and rural education. Although the work was occurring concurrently, it became apparent that these needed to be three separate books. I am excited to announce that the second book, "Unlock the Future," is also officially available on the Amazon store. While "Unleashing Your Purpose" is targeted primarily toward teachers and school leaders, "Unlock the Future" will resonate with teachers, school leaders, parents, community leaders, and anyone with a teenager in their life who is preparing to head out into the world. Our job as adults is not to make decisions for young people but to provide them the necessary skills and resources to confidently make that choice themselves. Let's " Unlock the Future " for tomorrow...

"Unleashing Your Purpose" When a Reminder is Needed

What a great start to the school year! Now, the work begins, supporting each student in doing their best and continuing their growth. Below is an excerpt from my book intended to get teachers and school leaders grounded in their purpose, making this task more manageable. Finish the first month strong! "Education is more than a profession; it's a calling, a passion, and a purpose that drives us to shape the future one student at a time. As educators we often find ourselves caught in the whirlwind of lesson plans, assessments, and ever-evolving curricula. Amidst this, we may lose sight of why we chose this path in the first place—the moments that first sparked our desire to teach, the passion that ignited within us, and the drive to make a difference in the lives of our students. This book will invite you to revisit those moments and reconnect with your core purpose as an educator. Throughout its pages, you will embark on a reflective journey, exploring the threads that weave ...

The Power of Listening as a Leader

As leaders, particularly in education and early in the school year, we often focus on providing direction, feedback, and motivation. But one of the most underrated leadership skills is taking the time to listen. When we actively listen to our team, we’re not just hearing their words—we’re giving them a sense of value and engagement. This week, I had the chance to spend time with some staff and listen to their experiences at the start of the year. Some have been great, others provide opportunities to get better. What a powerful 45 minutes spent! I've seen studies note that employees who feel heard are 4.6 times more likely to perform at their highest level (Forbes, 2021), and I'm confident I learned some things this week that we can use to improve our teachers' efficiency, effectiveness, and enjoyment. Listening isn't passive; it's a key tool for building trust, fostering innovation, and ensuring each team member knows their voice matters. A great reminder to keep...

Empowering Students to Shape Their Own Future After High School

When students walk across the stage at their high school graduation, they are standing at the threshold of a world full of possibilities. What comes next is a deeply personal choice: whether to enroll in a college or trade school, enter the workforce, enlist in the armed services, or even take some time to figure out their next steps. Each of these paths is valid, and each can lead to a fulfilling and successful life. But here's the key—students should be prepared to make these decisions intentionally. Too often, we hear stories of young people who "fall back" into a choice simply because it was the easiest or most available option at the time. Our goal as educators, parents, and mentors should be to equip students with the knowledge, tools, and experiences they need to confidently lean into their chosen path and create their own future, not simply accept one that’s handed to them. The Power of Preparedness One of the greatest gifts we can give students is the ability to...

Building a Foundation for Success: Fostering Relationships, Empathy, and Support at the Start of the School Year

As school leaders, our primary goal is to create environments where students, staff, and families feel connected, valued, and supported. The start of the school year offers a powerful opportunity to lay the foundation for lasting success. By focusing on relationships, empathy, and support from day one, we can foster a sense of belonging and build a strong community that will pay dividends throughout the year. Here’s how school leaders can take intentional steps to set the tone for success: 1. Prioritize Relationship-Building Strong relationships are the cornerstone of a thriving school environment. School leaders can model relationship-building by being visible and approachable, greeting students at the door, and creating time for staff to connect with each other and students. It is equally important to encourage teachers to dedicate time to community-building activities in their classrooms at the beginning of the year . Creating opportunities for families to engage early on, such ...

Unleashing Your Purpose and Passion: The Key to Transformative Education

Yet, amidst the curriculum demands, administrative tasks, and daily challenges, it's easy to lose sight of why we chose this noble profession in the first place. Identifying and embracing your purpose and passion isn't just a personal journey—it's a transformative process that enhances your ability to serve students effectively. The Power of Purpose in Education Purpose acts as our North Star, guiding our decisions, actions, and interactions within the educational landscape. When you clearly understand your "why," it becomes easier to align your teaching methods, classroom environment, and professional goals accordingly. Why Public Schools Matter: A Reflection

Welcome to the first entry of my new blog, where I will share my thoughts and experiences to support school leaders, teachers, and students. As a superintendent, educational leader, author, speaker, and executive coach, I have dedicated my career to understanding the unique challenges and opportunities within rural school leadership, helping educators find their purpose, practicing empathetic leadership, and ensuring that we provide a range of options for life for our students. Through this blog, I hope to offer insights that inspire and empower those committed to making a difference in the lives of young people. Public schools are the heart of our communities, serving as a foundation for the lives of our students and a catalyst for opportunity. They are where children from all walks of life come together to learn not just academics but also empathy, resilience, and the value of diversity. Public schools provide a unique environment where every child can access a high-quality education...
