The Power of Curiosity: Fuel for a Growth-Oriented Life

Think back to the last time you felt a genuine sense of wonder. Maybe it was a question that made you pause, an unexpected challenge that stirred your imagination, or even a child’s simple “why?” that got you thinking in new ways. Moments like these remind us that curiosity is a lifelong catalyst for personal growth. Curiosity acts as a lantern, illuminating paths forward even when the road ahead seems uncertain. It encourages us to question our assumptions, challenge the familiar, and explore possibilities we may have otherwise overlooked. When curiosity becomes a habit, it transforms every experience into an opportunity to learn and grow. One powerful lesson I share in "Own the Shift" is that curiosity is the engine of a growth mindset. It nudges us to step away from comfort and into exploration, making us willing to unlearn, relearn, and adapt. A curious mind reframes mistakes as experiments and failures as feedback. It reminds us that the unknown isn’t something to fear...

Empathy Fuels Accountability, and Accountability Drives Excellence

In today’s workplaces, we hear a lot about empathy, and rightfully so. But let’s be clear: empathy alone isn’t what drives results. Accountability is. Accountability is what keeps teams aligned, ensures goals are met, and holds people to high standards. It’s what turns strategy into action. But here’s the truth too many leaders overlook: Empathy isn’t a soft alternative to accountability. It’s the fuel that makes accountability sustainable, meaningful, and effective. Why Accountability Matters Accountability isn’t about micromanaging or issuing ultimatums. It’s about creating clarity and follow-through. In organizations where accountability is strong: Employees understand what’s expected of them. Goals are transparent and measurable. Performance is monitored and discussed openly. There’s ownership of outcomes—good or bad. Without accountability, performance suffers. Projects stall, morale declines, and trust erodes. Leaders who fail to hold people accountable may f...

Rural Schools Need Bold Action, Not Best Intentions, to Diversify Our Teaching Workforce

Rural Schools Need Bold Action, Not Best Intentions, to Diversify Our Teaching Workforce As a superintendent in a rural district, I’ve seen firsthand how the richness of our students’ experiences is shaped not only by what we teach but by who teaches it. Yet, despite the growing diversity in our student population, many rural schools are still staffed by teaching teams that do not reflect the students they serve. This isn’t due to a lack of care or commitment. It’s due to deeply embedded barriers that persist in our recruitment and retention systems, barriers I explored in depth through my doctoral research on rural schools in Minnesota. One of the key findings of my study is that while rural school leaders widely believe in the value of diversifying their teaching staff, their belief alone does not translate into action. Strategic practices, such as establishing “grow your own” pathways, mentoring programs, equity-centered professional development, and inclusive hiring processes, a...

The Comfort Trap: How Good Leaders Build Capacity, Not Dependence

Are You Supporting Your Team… or Preparing Them? Support is essential in any healthy organization. Your people need to know they’re seen, valued, and backed by leadership especially in high-pressure roles where the stakes are high and burnout is real. But if we stop at support, we miss the bigger picture. As leaders, we aren't just responsible for making our teams feel good. We're responsible for helping them grow. In my years leading schools, developing professional development programs, and coaching other leaders, one principle has always proven true: Support without challenge builds comfort, not capacity. And comfort is a dangerous place to live for too long. The Illusion of “Nice” Leadership We all want to be known as supportive leaders. It feels good when people describe us as approachable, empathetic, or kind. But when support becomes the sole focus, something critical gets lost: growth . Leadership isn't about making people feel safe at the expense of m...
