Connecting to Moments in the Year Ahead

As we step into a new school year, I’m reminded of the tremendous privilege and responsibility that comes with serving in education. Each of us, teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, bus drivers, food service workers, support staff, administrators, plays a vital role in shaping the daily experience of our students.

The work we do is rewarding, but it’s also demanding. There are the visible tasks of lesson planning, supporting families, keeping classrooms and buildings safe and welcoming. And then there’s the invisible work: the encouraging word in the hallway, the quiet reassurance to a student having a tough day, the extra phone call home after hours. It all matters, and it all adds up.

One of my favorite examples comes from Coach Mike Krzyzewski, who spoke about the power of “feel it” moments while coaching the USA men’s basketball team. He reminded his players that their purpose was not only about plays or wins but also moments that carried real meaning, moments they could feel.

In our schools, we experience those moments too. They might look like a student who suddenly discovers confidence after a teacher’s encouragement. Or a colleague who goes above and beyond to help a family in need. Or a graduate who returns years later to say, “You made a difference.”

These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do. They are the heartbeat of education.

As we begin this new year, I encourage all of us to look for these moments, create them, and celebrate them. Our focus isn’t only on lesson plans, schedules, or tasks. It’s on the impact we have in the lives of others. That’s the real measure of our success.

This year, let’s commit to working for the moments that matter. The spark in a student’s eyes when learning finally clicks. The relief on a parent’s face when they know their child is supported. The feeling of knowing that your role, whatever it may be, made a difference in someone’s day.

Together, let’s create a year filled with those moments.
